How baleen whales, which include humpback whales, are able to sing underwater has eluded scientists since whale songs were first discovered more than 50 years ago. A baleen whale’s larynx is shaped differently from other mammals. This structural adaptation allows the leviathan to breathe massive amounts of air in and out when they go to the surface, according to the study. Air sacs also evolved in a way that may allow a baleen whale to recycle air while creating vocal sounds, according to researchers. This means that most boating noises mask calls between baleen whales, reducing the distance over which they can communicate.

Descoperirea unei specii de focă în prezent dispărută, care a trăit în emisfera sudică, a “răsturnat cu susul în jos” ceea ce oamenii de ştiinţă cunoaşteau despre evoluţia acestor vieţuitoare, au anunţat miercuri cercetătorii, relatează Xinhua, scrie agerpres.ro. Oamenii de ştiinţă au denumit noua specie Eomonachus belegaerensis, după Marea Belegaer din seria literară “Stăpânul inelelor” a scriitorului J.R.R. Cercetătorii estimează că aceste foci aveau o lungime de aproximativ 2,5 metri şi cântăreau aproximativ 200-250 de kilograme. Un reprezentant al Muzeului Te Papa din Noua Zeelandă, Felix Marx, curator al mamiferelor marine şi colaborator în cadrul studiului, a mulţumit persoanelor care au descoperit fosilele. “Noua Zeelandă este incredibil de bogată în fosile şi până în prezent abia am râcâit suprafaţa.
